Tips from Scoble

Photo of keynoteThe morning session of the Blog Business Summit is a keynote is Robert Scoble, technical evangelist and blogger for Microsoft. Scoble is the acknowledged poster boy of the power blogs can have for businesses. Scoble says that whatever else a blogger is, a blogger must have passion and authority. The combination produces valuable content for readers, and that they—probably —can trust.

As well:

  • Read other blogs. A lot.
  • Link.
  • Link to your competitors.
  • Realize that blogging has a payoff, even if it isn’t sales. If your company does any kind of outreach —say, sends people to speak at conferences—blogging can produce similar results for less money.

Scoble also talked about reasons why people don’t want to blog, and asked for input from the audience. Common fears:

  • I’m going to look stupid.
  • People are going to say nothing about me.
  • People are going to say bad things about me.
  • No one is going to look at my site.
  • I’m going to say more than I should—too much transparency.
  • I’m afraid things will come back to bite me (apparently there are semi-naked pictures of Robert somewhere on the Web. I’ll leave you to search for those.).
  • It will take too much time.

Check out the other blog posts and mentions via Technorati. I’ll see what I can do about better photos later, but in the meantime, check Flickr.
