What Blogs Are Really About

This from the Unvarnished blog recently:

I think we bloggers get b(l)ogged down in whether comments or trackbacks or categories or permalinks make a blog a blog.  I think it’s none of those things, and I think the defining characteristic of a blog is also the reason why people react so harshly to “fake” bloggers.

The thing about blogs, you see, is that there are people behind them, and you get to see those people, and connect with those people.  That’s something that is exceedingly rare in traditional media—it’s something that traditionally only columnists get to do, and even then, not every columnist develops the same openness that most bloggers seem to do intuitively.

It’s true, isn’t it? Blogs are unique and special in the Internet world because they let you make connections with people—and in the case of business blogs, with the people behind the corporate logo. It’s a great time to have a Web site!

  2. I think what also makes a blog a blog is the text-like format. It’s so simple, and informal, ans full of current and useful information.

  3. I agree and disagree.

    When you describe blogs as a medium “with real people behind them” and that blogs are special because you you get to connect with these real people, well, yes, I like that about many blogs.

    But blogs are also about other things like creating a community around topics, where an interchange can happen easily. No other medium makes it as easy to do this.

    This is a technology that cannot be limited by our desire to hold it in a container and label all other variations as “fake.”

    We’re only at the beginning of what blogs will mean over the next five years ... but I hope one of the things we don’t lose along the fantastic journey is this ability to connect with real people.

  4. Blogs can be used as tools for creating on-line communities of people interested in the same subjects. Number of people can describe their thoughts, activities and reactions, and thereby share them with others who participate on the blogsite with them.

    Blogs have become very influential components of the Internet and their importance is growing exponentially. Blogs are a great marketing, monitoring, conversing and learning tools that should be taken advantage of by individuals and businesses everywhere.

  5. I think used correctly blogs are a great way for the individual to be heard and for others to know that they are not alone in their opinion on a current topic. It’s a bit like subscribing to a newspaper that has contributors whose only qualification is a passion for a subject as opposed to just being good journalists.
