Liability Insurance for Blogging?

I spoke with a reporter today whose editor has asked for a story on liability insurance for corporate blogs—what companies offer it, what companies are buying it, and what it covers.

It’s a fascinating question—and one I haven’t been asked before (I love those). Unfortunately, it’s the first time it’s come up, at least for me, so I’m looking for anyone out there who has maybe thought about, looked at, or heard anything about blog liability insurance. the article could go a couple of directions, but certainly the obvious questions are, do you need liability insurance for a corporate blog, and do you need coverage when you encourage your employees to blog about their work experiences. So how about it, folks? Anyone know anything about blog liability insurance? You’ll likely get quoted for the article if you do!

  1. I don’t have a corporate blog, but rather a personal one, a conversation about how to navigate through cyberspace. I advertise through Ad Sense and, soon, through Amazon.com.

Although I have been searching extensively for a business liability insurance policy for weblogs,I haven’t had any luck. I’d like to keep in touch in case I do come up with helpful information.

If you hear of such a policy, please let me know.

    Sincerely,

  2. My insurance broker told me yesterday that my blog’s liability is covered under my homeowner’s policy.

To be able to give me that “yes”, he had to work hard. First, he asked the insurance company to give him a crash course on blogs. I gave him another crash course from the perspective of a blogger. As I spoke, he took extensive notes, and then we looked at my blog, until he understood the gist of its intent, along with the advertising.

The insurance company also looked at my blog, and from that the rep decided that, yes, my homeowner’s policy would cover my blog at no additional charge. My broker said that when my blog earned $600.00 or more, I might need additional coverage.

During our conversation today, my broker asked me not to present this as an across-the-board fact. Each case like mine would have to be handled on an individual basis.

    Sincerely,

  5. I totally just see some insurance company starting to offer liability insurance for corporate bloggers. I guess you never know when some one working for company can say something about the company that might create some problems

  6. Special insurance policies, such as those we offer are available to cover the “internet exposures” of businesses large and small, including liability for comments published over the internet.

  7. Commercial General Liability A Comprehensive cover offering combination of Public liability and Product liability cover with many additional cover. The Policy ideally covers liabilities arising out of Insureds premises, or operations and also products manufactured, sold or distributed by the Insured. The additional covers available under the policy include, personal and advertising injury, medical expenses, product completed operations, damages to rental premises, vendors clause, additional Insured as declared by the Insured, accidental pollutions.  The information required by the Insurers to fix the premium price would be the limits of liability selected, the turnover, the type of products, quality control measures, areas of operations, the surroundings of the Insured premises amongst various other information required.

this is what the law has to say about liability insurance. Just my 2 cents.
