Popular blog Boing Boing has run ads on the Web site for some time, but are now looking to expand their revenue potential by introducing RSS ads:
Unlike many blogs, we syndicate the full text of our entries, which means you don’t have go to the web site to read the full story for a particular post. We’re working with Feedburner and Overture on incorporating ads in RSS, and it’s an experiment. Most of the time, the ads are contextually related to the entries. We’re limiting the placement of the ads so they only appear in fewer than a third of our posts.
Ads in RSS feeds annoy some, for fairly obvious reasons. But for sites like Boing Boing that provide full entires in the RSS feed lose the ability the advertise at all to those who chose to consume the site via RSS instead of visiting it. What do you think of the technique?
