Perseus Development Corp.’s new survey, The Blogging Geyser, indicates that there were 31.6 million hosted blogs created in the first quarter of 2005. No doubt many of those were people testing whether they really could start a blog in 10 minutes, but that’s still a huge number.
Perseus surveyed 10,000 blogs on 20 blog-hosting services. BlogSpot, Xanga and LiveJournal are the leading blog-hosting companies, according to Perseus, which perhaps indicates that the vast majority of these blogs are personal rather than professional.
Perseus expects the number of hosted blogs on the 20 blog-hosting services they surveyed to exceed 53.3 million by the end of 2005. This is a greater increase than previous Perseus surveys indicated was likely.
